Ride the Remote Work Wave for Cost Savings, Greater Productivity, Lower Turnover
A little over a year ago I blogged about employee engagement research by Forrester which predicted that by 2016, over 40% of workers in the U.S. will telecommute for their employers. Citing another source later in my post, I called attention to some of the business benefits of supporting remote work arrangements, including improved productivity.
Would you believe that productivity can increase by more than 20% when remote work is supported as part of people practices? It’s true, according to more current research by The Telework Coalition (hat tip to Julie Urlaub at Taiga Company – she writes one of the blogs I follow in a list I share on Twitter).
Not only that, but remote working has been shown to reduce employee turnover by half. All told, the Coalition reports, businesses save $20,000 on average per year for each employee who works remotely.
With results like that, if it works for your business and your workplace culture, your company should ride the remote work wave that is on the rise. The almost 500 small businesses that applied for Winning Workplaces’ award this year seem to be doing so: there were 308 references in their qualitative workplace feedback to remote, telecommute/ing, and work from home.
