The ability to accomplish important work through others is a characteristic of successful managers. The inter-action between the leader of the team and the individuals on the team determines their success. At the heart of this synergy is mutual trust, fostered by communications. The key question remains, how does the manager develop the trust-relationship? When this is at the optimum level, the manager will see productivity and execution increase.
So, what is it that will help the manager build trust? People expect to earn the manager’s trust regarding their capabilities and skills. They are thinking,”my manager cares about my development and so I care about contributing more.” This factor in team building can not be over-emphasized. People who are given regular opportunities for professional development become more committed to the business unit than those without opportunities. They see this interest in their growth as an indication that their manager is also a leader.
Constructive coaching is another key to successful management and team building. A manager’s job is to direct the work and development of the employees in their care. When people screw up or fail to complete an assignment as directed, the best managers tell them. They are more concerned about the individual’s growth and the team’s success than they are about hurting someone’s feelings. They are direct, professional, specific and directional. Being directional means pointing out where they need to get better, by when and how they will do so. When an individual does something exceptional, improves, performs better, the manager gives sincere recognition. They reinforce the positive results and coach the negative results.
